In the West Bank, where movement is heavily restricted, motor racing has become hugely popular – especially with the recent arrival of the “Speed Sisters” on the scene. A team of six women, addicted to the thrill of speed are now competing alongside the men to become hero of the track.
Juliano Mer Khamis, born to a Jewish Israeli mother and a Palestinian father, was murdered yesterday in the West Bank town of Jenin. He was one of the most courageous people in a region eternally short on courage, insisting that art and theater, not violence, would lead the way out of the conflict. In 2003, he made this documentary film about his mother and the Palestinian theater group for children she had founded, a group that gave hope to many of the impoverished and dispossessed kids living in the town’s refugee camp. The film won a host of awards in international festivals, and is that rare creature, a movie about the Middle East that restores one’s faith in humankind.
